Doorway OnlineDoorway Online is a collection of free and highly accessible educational games that learners will find easy to use independently. Each activity has a range of accessibility and difficulty options. Originally developed with funding from Scottish Borders Council, it is now managed by the Doorway Accessible Software Trust, a Scottish charity.

Add and Subtract to 100

The suite uses animated tens and units “blocks” to give learners experiences from place value to the full notation of addition and subtraction bridging ten. Explore: See the effect of adding units or tens and taking then away. Make the Number: An activity with a learning mode and an assessment mode. What’s the number? Identify the number made by the blocks. Sums with blocks Addition and Subtraction including the bridging of ten. Written Sums: Notation of sums, including carrying and decomposition.

Add and Subtract to 10

Practise addition and subtraction in the range 1-10, using on-screen number blocks. Number Bonds and subtraction can be reinforced and tested. Tags: adding, addition, subtraction, take away, to 10, sums, numeracy, maths, 1 to 10.

Count Me In

Activities to familiarise learners with numbers to 20, 50 and 100 and the stations of the times tables up to 10. Hear the Number and Find the Number are speech supported activities that reinforce learners’ understanding of two digit numbers and their relationships. In Times Tables Stations learners count on to build the patterns that underpin the times tables. This sub-activity is extremely useful. It can be used a preparation for learening a “Times Table”. It can provide a visual pattern within the 100 square. In some learners the visual patteren can be a strong reinforcer of the sequences involved in learning tables.

Switch Access. This activity, like most Doorway activities, can be operated by switches. Generally, in two switch mode, a switch that emulates pressing the space bar moves the highlight on by one position and the Enter key confirms the action. In single switch mode, a switch press emulates the Space Bar.  The learner can access all the same functions of the activity, but the timing of the focus moving forward must be set to an interval that suits the learner.

Number Table

Practise recognising numbers and their pace within a sequence of  numbers by placing counters on a table. Users are shown a complete number table, then after some numbers are removed, the user fills in the blanks using counters.  This activity is graded in difficulty; the number tables can be set to specific ranges including: 1-10, 1-20, 1-50 and 1-100.
Easy Interface – Touch to Move – This activity uses a simple method of moving the counters from the bottom of the screen to their proper place. A single touch highlights the counter and all the possible target cells; a touch on one of thise cells  moves the counter to a cell on the grid.

Up to 10

Doorway Up to 10 allows users to practise the essential skill of counting items within the range 1-10. Numbers are spoken as you count. Users can choose to use structured patterns for the numbers 1-10.  These patterns within a 5X2 grid provide lots of learning opportunities. Concrete materials such as Sterne Maths and Numicon reinforce the patterns and can be used to teach addition within 10. However, more cheaply cards can be made up and the patterns made with stickers.

Odd and Even

Five practical activities to help establish the essential concept of Odd and Even.   Pairing – an amount of shoes is seen as “odd” if there is an odd shoe left over. Even amounts have all the shoes in pairs and no odd shoes left over.  The development of this activity has been funded by the RS McDonald Trust. We are very grateful for their support.  Odd and Even to 10 – Ladybirds with the same number of spots on each side are even and coloured blue, the odd ones are coloured red. Can you sort them?  Odd and Even Pattern to 20 – The odd numbered houses in a street need to be painted red and the even numbered one painted blue. Can you paint them correctly? As you do this you should see a pattern emerge.

RSMacDonaldWe are grateful to the RS MacDonald for their grant towards developing this activity.
Odd and Even Pattern to 100  is a tutorial that extends the principle of the previous activity to a a 100 square. The patteen of the odd and even numbers is shown very clearly.  Find Odd and Even Game – This coconut shy game lets learners test their knowledge of odd and even numbers to 10. Can they get through the game without  mistakenlt trying to knock down a an odd numbered coconut when an one should be targeted?

The pairing subactivity only operates in single switch mode.
