Doorway Online is a completely new implementation of a highly successful learning package used in the 1990s on Acorn computers. This freely available online resource draws on key principles: accessibility, availability and inclusiveness.

Principles

Accessibility

All software is fully accessible to keyboard only users, mouse only users and switch users where possible. Software is suitable for users of interactive whiteboards (IWBs). At an early stage of development, a Consultation was held with CALL Scotland to discuss how to optimise accessibility for the Doorway suite, making the software as accessible as possible for as many users as possible.

Availability

The software is available over the internet. In this way it can be run on any computer with internet access*. Learners will be able to use the same activities at home as in school and teachers will be able to recommend which exercises to practice.

Inclusiveness

This suite aims to provide a highly educational experience for users of all abilities. There should be very little need for ‘special needs’ software as all software should be fully accessible.

*Flash Player (version 8 or higher) is required to use Doorway activities

History

These activities were first implemented on Acorn RISC OS Computers in the early 1990s by Andrew Burt and Philip Whittaker, using the Doorway Multimedia development system created by Roger Spooner and Andrew Burt.

The ideas for the software on this site are Philip Whittaker’s. He is the ICT Support Teacher for Additional Needs in Scottish Borders.

The design and implementation of the current activities are by Thomas Lee.
